The First Snow of the Year

snow

So, finally, on January 18th, New York City is seeing its first snow. Once again, the streets are covered in white, and it finally feels like Christmas! (be it almost an entire month late) But still, the snow is here. It’s time to find that sweater, gather in a coffee shop, and put on some Fiona Apple. Right now, I have 2 out of the 3.

I’m plotting. Dreaming. Mischiefing. A big travel event is coming up next weekend that I have to go to for work. You go to meet and mingle. To set up trips and potential articles. my goal is to fill my year with as many trips as possible.

My goal is to have at least 1 trip every single month. And yet, something in me also wants to run away. I have always wanted to run. I want to go somewhere new, unexpected, and exciting. I want to do something. I want to make something happen.

charlie brown snow

Snowy days like these always make me want to travel. To run. I want to hop on a flight to Botswana and go volunteer at a nature sanctuary. I want to fly to Australia and help with the fires. I want to go instal solar panels in the 3rd world. I want to do something!!!!!!!

The problems we have in America are so fucking stupid. Republicans are stirring up fear, anger, and hatred against poor people, women, LGBTQ people, Jewish people, black people, muslims, Mexicans, and literally, anyone who isn’t them.

And because our country is so focused fighting for dumb things that should be obvious to everyone, we can’t work on the bigger issues. The bigger problems. The real problems. I’m bored of this country. I’m bored of the bullshit of America. I’m bored of how easily Americans were bought and sold. Of how easy it was to completely divide America and destroy it from the inside.

airplane

And so, I want to run. I want to go somewhere else. Somewhere new. Somewhere where adventure is still possible. Where making friends is still possible. Where learning something new is still possible. Where growing as a person is still possible.

And I understand that I probably sound spoiled, and that’s also the problem with America. We have this problem where, if someone can see the situation from the outside…from a different perspective…they’re labeled privileged or spoiled or uneducated. When in reality, maybe they’re not. Just because someone calls you out on bullshit doesn’t mean that they’re the problem. Maybe…. just maybe… you’re full of bullshit.

And so, I want to run. Go somewhere new. Away from Trumpism. Away from #Woke. Away from America.

I want to run.

The Problem with America’s Growing Economy

economy

So, there’s a problem in our economic model right now that nobody seems to be aware of. And that problem is freelance, casual, and temporary employment.

Freelance is like a writer for most websites. They’re paid per-article (some websites pay fair wages, some don’t) but there is no job protection and employers aren’t required to provide any sort of benefits to them.

Casual employment is the jobs that come from apps. Think Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Wag (among the millions of others) and even websites such as Fiverr. These technically allow people to work “whenever they want”, but in reality, aside from the ride-share apps, you’re forced to work around other people’s schedules. Again, wages usually aren’t per-hour, they’re per-task or from bonuses.

Temporary is like Christmas jobs in retail and summer jobs at resorts. They last from 1-3 months and then they won’t exist again until the next year.

lyft

So, here’s the problem – Yes, the number of jobs in America is increasing, but a lot of those job numbers come from freelance, casual, and temporary employment.

This creates four massive problems:

The first is that while technically “a job” was created, there’s no guarantee as to how many hours a week these people can work, nor is there any guarantee as to how much money they can make even while they are working.

In the case of freelancers, someone can have a freelance contract with Forbes or a similar site, but that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed an article everyday. And some sites pay as little as $15 per article. Imagine you spend an entire morning working on an article to wind up with $15. Even if you churned out four articles a day, that’s a before-tax take-home of just $60.

The same goes for casual and temporary. Your Christmas season job at Target probably won’t give you 40 hours a week, and and just how many hours a day do you think you’ll be spending walking people’s dogs on Wag?

Wag On-Demand Dog Walking App In Washington DC

This brings us to the second problem. Because these three types of jobs are so sporadic and unpredictable, many people are forced to take on multiple. For example, it’s extremely common for drivers to be registered with both Uber and Lyft. It’s also extremely common for freelancer writers to have freelance contracts with up to five different companies in order to be able to make as much money as possible. it’s also common for people in restaurants and retail to hold multiple jobs.

This looks great on paper. For every ride-share driver, two jobs have been created – One with Uber and one with Lyft. For every freelance writer who’s balancing five gigs, technically speaking, five jobs have been created.

But as is obvious, you can’t drive for Uber while simultaneously driving for Lyft. Similarly, if a freelancer is writing for Forbes one morning, they can’t also be simultaneously writing for another company too. People can only take on one job at a time. This means that while the freelancer has created five jobs, in reality, only one of those jobs is being actively worked at any given time. This is a problem because it’s massively altering our unemployment numbers.

Despite what conservatives think, nobody likes to be unemployed. When asked, Americans will gladly say they’re employed… even if that employment is nothing more than causal employment on an app, where they might only be working 15 hours per week. So while it seems like America is having this massive economic boom, it’s a facade for the reality, which is that a lot of the employment being created is fragile, falsified, and underpaid.

writer

Which leads us to the third problem. This kind of employment is extremely fragile and holds absolutely no security and no benefits of any kind. The biggest threat is the looming recession ahead. When people start losing jobs, they (obviously) start losing money too. And the first thing to go will be the unneeded luxuries. Paying a stranger to walk your dog through Wag, for example, will not be the highest priority on people’s minds when they’re looking to save money. Similarly, paying that person on TaskRabbit (another popular job app) to plant your flowers will also become one of the first things people cut out of their budget.

The less money there is to go around, the less demand app-employment will have. The same goes for restaurants and retail. During recessions, people cook more and buy less clothing. A lot of the jobs we’re currently creating can only be sustained in a good economy.

task rabbit

The fourth problem will make everything even worse. As more people become unemployed, more people will desperately try to find easy work through the apps and in unskilled labor like restaurants and retail. I remember growing up in Ohio during the last recession and waiting tables at a diner around grown adults with master’s degrees.

The same will happen for app employment. As people lose their stable jobs, they’ll seek employment on the apps until they can find another job. So, as demand decreases, supply will increase, only cannibalizing on people’s attempts at scoring work.

The same will happen to freelance roles. During the last recession, we saw many staff positions be phased out, with companies opting instead for freelancers who don’t need to be paid as much and who don’t need to be given benefits. Freelance work almost always occurs at a lower pay rate than staff positions, causing even more people’s wages to be lowered. An even bigger problem is that many companies never rebounded after the recession. Many staff jobs never returned, and companies, always looking to save a buck, decided to continue using freelance work over staff positions.

The question is, what to do about the precarious situation we’re in? How do we fix a problem that hasn’t even been addressed yet? How do we keep an economy built on fragile employment from toppling over like a Jenga tower? And most importantly, what will we do during the next economic downturn to prevent it from completely collapsing?

The Republican Cult

cult

So, one of the big projects I did back in grad school was write a 30-page paper on cults. I interviewed cult members, scholars who wrote the academic books on cults, religious leaders, and people who specialize in de-radicalization.

The one thing that has always been in my mind since Trump became president is, Wow, this is just like a cult. Trump is insanely similar to cult leaders. He’s a complete delusional idiot that to most humans, seems nuts, but to a percentage, seems like a God. (Think Charles Manson, Marshall Applewhite, Jim Jones, David Koresh, and so on.  To most of us, just hearing them speak raises so many red flags…and yet they convinced people to kill others and/or themselves)

Also, Republicans no longer care about issues, or what’s right and wrong, they just care about Trump, and about feeling correct whether they are or not… just like cult members. Losing personal autonomy and becoming part of the “hive mind” is standard textbook cult stuff. It’s why Republicans have no problem with Trump making fun of a disabled reporter, asking his staff to break the law, mocking a teenager on Twitter, asking the Ukrainian President to dig up dirt on his political foes, and so on. Trump can do no wrong to them, because Trump has become their God. They now need Trump. Because they are nothing without him. It’s the same way cult leaders are able to convince people to run away to remote compounds with them, take up crazy diets and religious practices, and usually, to end up killing themselves. Republicans are nothing more than putty, waiting for their creator to mold them.

trump

Today, I was walking to the store to get toothpaste, when suddenly, a Republican and his friend (whose affiliation I’m not sure) walked out of a Chipotle and cut me off.  So then I was walking behind them… here’s what I heard:

Republican: And you know what he said? You know what he said to me?  He was like, You’ve been brainwashed!

Friend: (Silence)

Republican:  And I was like… brainwashed?  What? How could he say that to me?

Friend: (Silence)

Republican: And I’m like, I mean… it takes one to know one right? Like, the only way he could possibly know I’m brainwashed is if he is too right?

Friend: (Silence)

Republican:  That’s the thing with Democrats, they just think they’re better than everyone, like, even though they’re so wrong about everything! And then he calls me the brainwashed one! I can’t believe Democrats!

And that’s when I decided to take a detour to the store, because I couldn’t handle listening to a crazy person justify his insanity to himself. It was too depressing.

And for the record, OF COURSE non-brainwashed people can know if someone else is brainwashed. Otherwise, there’d be no way to study cults.

freedome kids.gif

Yeah this whole freedom kids stuff that went on?  Anyone ever hear of the Hitler Youth? It’s been done before, and it’s just more standard cult shit.

Also, if you haven’t watched this yet, it is completely gross, and will make you feel dirty.

Here’s another great clip to watch, where Trump supporters blindly agree to the quotes they’re hearing when told they are from Trump, when really, they are from Hitler.

Is Trumpism possibly the largest cult in history, rivaled only by Nazism? It seems so.

America is fucked.

Changing Views of Race in America

movie

So, when I was growing up, I used to be scared when the theater would fill up with too many black people. During the 2000’s, when rap movies were coming out all over the place, like Get Rich or Die Tryin, Hustle & Flow, Notorious, and then even when the should-be-inspirational black film Pride came out, the theaters in my hometown always had problems. Gang fights, shootings, stabbings – always at black movies. I’ve even been harassed for being gay by the black people in my hometown in a movie theater.  (for real, the mall in my hometown, where our largest theater is, had to instate an no hoods policy so security cameras can pick up everyones faces, and even banned anyone under 18 from being in the mall/theaters alone after 9pm without an adult present.
The violence got that bad.)

Because of that, anytime I started to see the theater fill up with mostly black people, I would get nervous. I didn’t want to deal a fight. I didn’t want to be harassed. I didn’t want trouble. I just wanted to see a movie.

However, the other week I saw the new 47 Meters Down, which… who doesn’t love a good shark movie?

47 meters down

The storyline was horrible, but who cares – it was sharks eating people.

Anyways… The point is this – So pretty much everyone in the audience but me and my friend was black. And yet, rather than being afraid, I actually felt safe. I was like, “Well, right now it’s white people who are shooting up movie theaters, so if it’s a theater of me and all black people, I feel like I’m going to be ok.”

And then I thought about how weird that is. That black people used to make me afraid, and now, white people make me afraid.

And then I thought about how fucked up and sad America is.

And then I thought about much I hate humans for murdering each other in general.

And then I got sad.

Anyways, just a little rambling from inside my mind. Make of it what you will, I’m just putting it out there,

The Hypocrisy of Liberals

hipster

So, as always, i feel I need to start this post by reminding everyone that I am not a Trump supporter and I will not vote him in 2020, nor do I support the alt-right. It’s sad that anytime you question someone these days, they assume you’re the enemy, or “the other side.”

However, I do need to do some liberal bashing right now. The topic today is drugs.

Exhibit A: Liberals are all up in arms about the problems at the border, and are all about helping the disenfranchised.

Exhibit B: The illegal drug trade from in South and Central America, that trickles into Mexico and then the US is a huge problem that contributes to these issues.

Exhibit C: Liberals do drugs.

So, liberals… CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOURSELF TO ME PLEASE?

hmm

And yes, I’m aware that “Pot should be legal” and I also understand that you “Just do MDMA sometimes at the club” or “A little cocaine at special occasions…

But here’s the thing. Pot isn’t legal for the most part yet, so buying it contributes to the drug trade. Don’t believe me? In 2017, a man was murdered in front of my house in Cambridge, MA over a pot deal gone wrong. It happens. Stop lying to yourself you selfish cunts who don’t deserve shit.

And sure, maybe you only do MDMA or coke sometimes…. but every other liberal like you also does it sometimes, and when you have a country of 300 million only doing drugs “sometimes” you wind up with a market that has a nonstop demand.

And especially to people of color – The rhetoric these days coming from people of color about the hardships faced by minority neighborhoods. The drugs, the poverty, the gangs, the poor education, the cops being against you – And yet, you’re participating in the illegal drug trade too! HOW ARE YOU NOT ASHAMED EVERY TIME YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO JUDGE OTHER PEOPLE?

moonlight

And what upsets me the most is that people who read this won’t care. In 2019, people (on both sides) are so full of themselves, so self-obsessed, so pious, so fucking delusional, that they’re not able to recognize their own flaws. They believe themselves to be the good guys, and anyone who questions them is OBVIOUSLY simply the bad guy…

So remember liberals, when you spark up your joint on Friday night, remember that tweet you sent out protesting the dispute at the border on Monday… and hopefully, you’ll recognize that you’re a total piece of shit hypocrite.

Trumpism is Terrifying, And I Have Proof

cunt

So, a few days ago Trump held a rally and once again got the audience to start cheering “Lock Her Up!”  Why? Who knows, he won the 2016 election against Hilary, and she isn’t running in 2020, so the unending belligerence is beyond me. But, as hopefully most of you know by now, Trump is a cunt, and that’s the real reason why he can’t stop.

He’s a power-hungry ego-maniac who, incredibly, is actually insanely stupid. Question for all you Americans – If we were to ask Trump what the capital of Washington was, do you think he’d actually know? I fully believe that he’s just a rambling lunatic who is only where he is because of the team that props him up everyday.  The same team that preys upon America’s stupid, hateful, fearful, and greedy.

Ok, so here’s what happened:  You’ve all heard by now that social media platforms sell your information to advertisers, right? No shock there. So, sometimes I like to go on Trump’s Facebook page and troll him because social media seems to be the only platform he actually pays attention to. In light of the drone bombing, I had made a comment saying something like, “It’s funny how a few days ago Trump claimed he solved the Iran problem, stating ‘Iran used to say I hate America, I don’t hear them saying that anymore!’ and then the next day they blow one of our drones out of the sky.”

Then, after that I go onto a website called IMPAwards, which is a database of newly-released movie posters, because I love movies… and this ad pops up:

87D6C19F-5BEC-4C9A-9E2E-75F7CD151650

Ok, my first problem is that this ad says nothing about the white men who have been doing things like shooting up churches, stabbing people on Portland trains, shooting up synagogues, running people over in Virginia, shooting up colleges, shooting up high schools, shooting up elementary schools, and mailing bombs to CNN….

My second problem is that this ad literally forgot to add the word BORDER.
THEY CAN’T EVEN SPELL PROPERLY!

White trash Trump supporters can’t even proofread their own advertisements!

AND THE BIG PROBLEM HERE is the targeted advertising in our current age. For me, I travel a lot and love different cultures and geography and such. I’ve never had a problem with targeted advertising because it means that all the ads I see on websites are for Virgin Atlantic, Outward Bound, Hawaii Tourism, and things like that. But this just perfectly showed me that there’s a problem with it: It saw I visited Trump’s Facebook page and threw in this ad…

But imagine if you’re a conservative? And your search history is filled with Fox News, Trump’s Facebook page, and InfoWars – ads like this must be as normal for them as Virgin Atlantic ads are to me! This kind of crazy shit is being fed to Trump supporters every single day, only making them think that their insane views are normal and acceptable and applaudable.

I’m very scared for 2020
